No more essays, New Graphics Card?

No more essays!! Well for this year anyway. Only things left for uni now is group project(building a website) and  study for exams. Last essay was on the importance of firewalls in internet communication. It was boring as frack. I'm kind of stuck on what to add to my project website, I've not got the best of groups either so they're not coming up with much either.

Recess, oh the memories

I've been offered a ATI(AMD) 5850 by a work mate. He'll give it to me for a very fair price and as I've already got the same card at the moment I could go crossfire. But I don't know whether or not to go for a newer Nvidea card instead. Maybe a 480? All my games run great at the moment but when Rage comes out I want to get the best out of that baby.

  1. What is the website project about? Maybe anyone here can give you some ideas.

  2. The website is "to promote the music of a single artist. A blog facility should be implemented which registered users can add comments to. A selection of products should be available to purchase through linking to external sites."

I've implemented the above but most marks are for additional functionality!

  8. Definitely would have to say go for Nvidia.
I've had great experiences with them, and they've never failed me. :)

  9. I've bounced between ATI and Nvidia over the last decade and I've found it really depends on the model both have pros and cons.

  13. I really have no preference between the two, just get a high quality one from either company and you should be set.

  14. nvidia and ati is kinda like spy vs spy, thats funny. I dont favor ether one, ive owned both types of cards and had good/bad experiences.

  16. Nvidia is better. I had problems when I had an ATI.

  19. Remember that a poor group is an opportunity to prove yourself as a leader. Now the task seems easy enought for a guy of your stature, one busy afternoon should do the thing. Sadly, I can't advise you on the graphics card thing.

  20. <----- BS in Computer Science... but still take everything I say with a grain of salt.
ATI has been pushing out high end cards that rival and sometimes top Nvidias (though usually not). But there are a few main things to consider...
    Power:
ATI has been pushing out cards that use a CONSIDERABLY lower power usage than Nvidia when idle (not playing any games or rendering any intensive software)... and also ATI cards still use a good amount less power when under stressed benchmark tests than Nvidia cards under the same tests.
    **winner (without a doubt): ATI**
    CrossFire vs. SLI -
Both are the exact same concept and do the exact same thing. However, ATI allows you to hook up ANY 2 "Cross Fire compatible" cards together (which is basically any ATI card made within the past 2-3 years). Nvidia only allows you to hook up cards in SLI mode if the are IDENTICAL... let me repeat... IDENTICAL. If I have a GeForce GTX 480 with 1GB of ram, and I purchase a seemingly identical GeForce GTX 480 with 2GB of ram... they WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SLI. Just keep this in mind... I'm not sure how big of a deal SLI/Cross-Fire is to you... Also ATI cards when in Cross-Fire can push out and manage 6 displays where Nvidia cards in SLI can only do 4 (Unless you have 3 cards in tri-SLI then maybe you can have 6 displays... not sure).
    **winner: ATI's flexibility in cross-fire**
    Finally... ability to disperse heat:
ATI's do have a reputation of overheating. More so than Nvidias. (How this is true when ATI's use much much less power... beats me. I think it is because often times ATI uses plain metal heatsyncs instead of loud ass fans... though they may be loud, fans win, or at least fan + metal wins.) If you have a big case with plenty of fans... you ATI card(s) will not overheat on you.
    **winner: Nvidia **
    Price:
    Easy...
    **winner: ATI **
With all this said and done... I still go Nvidia... call it quality over quantity... I like that Nvidia also has a universal architecture (they build each next card based off the last's design), and AMD/ATI have been known for using refurbished cards... (Oh, this HD5600 1GB had 512MB die... lets just resell it as a HD5600 512MB... certainly the other 512MB won't crap out as well...). So like I said... though I can say ATI wins most categories, I would go Nvidia.. sorry if I just confused you worse. *trollface.jpg*

  21. The 5850 owns. Do NOT buy the 480, it not only got pretty bad benchmarks and lost to ATI for that gen of graphics cards, it's simply so much money compared to what you get is not worth it

  22. Huh, RE: the website idea, me and a friend were throwing ideas about for music websites, and one was a collaboration project where samples (or even just notes) were available, and users could add a set number of these to a master track. Never looked into the coding aspect, never really messed about with audio, but allowing users to remix songs by said artist using provided samples would certainly promote it.
